1 Introduction

1.1 What Databbix is#

Databbix is a daemon that collects data from external sources and sends it to a Zabbix server. The sources can be SQL databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and any other database reachable through ODBC), REST or SOAP web services and MQTT brokers. Towards Zabbix, Databbix behaves as an active agent: it asks the server for the list of items it has to collect for a host, computes them by running queries and sends the results.

Unlike the Zabbix agent’s user parameters, Databbix:

  • keeps the database connection open between executions;

  • runs each query only once for all the items that use it, and shares the result rows among them;

  • caches results for a configurable time;

  • defines queries in XML files, with no programming required, and supports Zabbix low-level discovery (LLD).

1.2 How this manual is organised#

Part I, Fundamentals.

How Databbix works and the concepts used throughout the manual. Read it before configuring anything.

Part II, Common configuration.

Installation, the daemon, the common part of monitor files and XML query files, and the Zabbix configuration. Everything described here is the same for any data source.

Part III, Engines.

One chapter per engine (Database, Webservice and MQTT) with its configuration section, its XML elements and examples with data and results.

Part IV, Tools and usage.

Script programming, the queryexplorer utility, a practical guide and troubleshooting.
